“There are two ways to access Viagra in the UK, and there are also tablets and injections. Viagra is a prescription drug and should only be obtained on a doctor’s prescription.
“Patients will usually need to speak to their GP or prescriber about the details of their medication to determine if it is appropriate for them.”
The regulator said the MHRA was concerned about the risk of side effects associated with the drug, particularly in patients with certain medical conditions. It added that the agency was not aware of any studies that showed the use of the drug to be harmful.
The MHRA is also investigating whether the drug should be prescribed off-label following a study found that it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Viagra is not available on prescription.
This is not the first time Viagra has been linked to a sudden drop in blood pressure.
Dr Sophie Turner, a GP and medical director at the Royal College of Physicians, said: “When we first started receiving the information that the drug was being used for a certain purpose in patients with a high blood pressure we thought it was something to be cautious about and it wasn’t something to be taking lightly. Now, we have been able to investigate the connection and have found out more about it.
“The first thing we thought was that the safety of using Viagra for the purpose of lowering blood pressure was a bit off. We thought it was a bit of a risk and we’re now looking at more investigations to see if that actually applies to patients with cardiovascular diseases.”
Dr Sophie added: “But in most cases, Viagra is safe for most people. The most common side effects of the drug are dizziness, headache and nausea. There are also other possible side effects such as headaches and dizziness.
“However, Viagra has not been shown to cause any serious side effects in people with diabetes, heart disease or any other medical condition.”
This is the second time the MHRA has linked a sudden drop in blood pressure with Viagra, after its introduction in the UK in 1998. The drug was first marketed as a treatment for angina pectoris, a rare heart condition characterised by tight and hard chested.In 2016, a team led by Dr Catherine Hood and colleagues linked the drug to a sudden drop in blood pressure, as well as a heart attack in patients taking nitrates.
Heart attacks occur in about 30% of people taking nitrates for angina pectoris, according to the.
Dr Hood, chair of cardiovascular medicine at Cambridge Health, said: “These are medicines used to treat high blood pressure. These changes can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure. We thought this was a bit off because the risk of heart attack was very small. We were also surprised to hear that the risk of death was very low.
“We’re just now researching this further and are really worried about the safety of this medicine.”
The MHRA has been urged to take urgent action now to prevent heart attacks and stroke.
The regulator said it was “committed to ensuring that prescriptions issued to people with certain conditions are reviewed and updated”.
